This proposal re-envisions a new connection between Mumbai and Navi-Mumbai. Currently, the State Government of Maharashtra proposes to build a 22km automobile bridge from Nhava-Sheva (Navi Mumbai) to Sewri Bay (Island City) solely through private finances.  With the advent of new technology, this link will surpass typical automobile infrastructure and will function as a mediator between public and private programs, while acting as a proponent of intergenerational equity and environmental sustainability.  Within greater Mumbai, Sewri is a strategically located neighborhood, functioning as a potential cross-link between north and south Mumbai, as well as the eastern and western parts of the city. In addition, it is saturated with religious, historical, political and socio-ecological traits, illustrated by iconic elements such as Sewri Station, Sewri Fort, and Mumbai Port Trust housing, as well as a christian cemetery, a mosque and a mangrove ecosystem. LIFE LINE will affect the present and future in Sewri while retaining elements of the past by re-thinking the existing state proposal for the Mumbai Trans-Harbor Link. Sewri acts as a microcosm of Mumbai and will be a community that leads Mumbai in the near future. Architects and urban planners/designers will play a critical role in revealing the political and economic choices on the docklands as well as the city at large.
