SCOPE: Abandoned Railroad Research, GIS Analysis, Transformative Urban Systems and Implementation Plan
STATUS:  Concept Design

The transformation of Staten Island’s abandoned north shore railway has begun with plans for a light rail alignment connecting the island’s largest employer, the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, with St. George Terminal. However, with the plan in its infancy, a decade could pass before construction begins and longer still for realized revitalization. Declining north shore neighborhoods are in immediate need of interventions to address issues imperative for its long-term health and stability. Between today and the completion of the light rail system and beyond, we believe the opportunity exists to condition the corridor with a system of bicycle/pedestrian paths and mobile, flexible program pods to expedite revitalization. This conditioning reintroduces the rail right-of-way as a corridor for circulation, efficiently connecting residents to commercial and employment centers while simultaneously delivering real-time programs aimed to alleviate local deficiencies regarding employment, education, wellness and pleasure.
